Physical Education

Our Physical Education curriculum aims to ensure all our children:

- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

- are physically active for sustained periods of time both within the PE curriculum and beyond

  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy active lives
  • build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

These aims are closely linked to our School Development Plan to promote the health and wellbeing of our children.

In Key Stage 1 the children follow a multi-skills curriculum to develop fundemental movement skills and become increasingly competent and confident.  They engage in competitive activities both against themselves and others.  Children are taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination.
  • participate in team games developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.‚Äč

In Key Stage 2 there is more focus on communicating, collaborating and competing with each other learning how to evaluate and recognise their own success.  Sports become more sport-specific.  Our spiral curriculum ensures depth of knowledge and skill progression.

In line with government recommendations of an hour daily activity, our children complete a minimum of two hours curriculum PE per week and in addition, use our school running track, have organised playtime activities and pre-school and after school clubs.

Sports Grant

We work in close partnership with Premier Sport and are their Flagship School for East Sussex.  We use our Sports Grant to fund high quality coaching for all of our children.  Sports coaches work alongside class teachers to deliver outstanding PE.

School Games Mark

Our achievement of the 'Gold Sports Mark' for the last four years is testament to the high value we place on physical education and to the standards our children reach both within the curriculum and competitive sport.

We have many links with sporting partners including East Sussex County Cricket, Hastings and Bexhill RFC, Sama Karate, Little Common FC and ESPPA.  We use these partners to work with the children in school and to signpost identified children.

This year we are working towards a Platinum Sports Mark Award.

Clubs & Competitions

We offer an extensive range of after school sports clubs for all children as well as morning training sessions.

Our focus on high quality sport has led us to succeed in many level two competitions.  This year our school  represented  Hastings and Rother in two level three events: cross country and gymnastics, leading to a Bronze medal in the Sussex Games (gymnastics).
