Maths and Careers Week 2024

The children had a fabulous time during our Maths & Careers week, when they were able to experience activities linked to the theme, 'Maths is all around us!'  During the week the children focused on links between maths and stories; enjoying books such as 'How Many Jelly Beans?', 'How Big is a Foot?', 'The Lion's Share' and 'Have You Seen My Dragon?'  They also learned a great deal from a number of guest speakers, who told the children all about the Maths they use in their jobs - they heard from Accountants, Pet Shop Owners, Business Managers and a Geophysicist!

Maths Curriculum

At St Peter and St Paul CE Primary School we endeavour to teach our children a rich and progressive mathematics curriculum.  It has been devised so that it is accessible to all and maximises development of every child's ability and academic achievement.  We deliver daily lessons that are creative and engaging making relevant connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.  Our aim is for children to leave as confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians; who understand that mathematics is a fundamental part of everyday life and the world we live in.  We provide children with real life learning experiences and opportunities to ensure that they are confident to deal with the challenges the world presents.  We want our children to develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics with a deep understanding that will stay with them for life and serve them in their future.

We teach the children the following essential characteristics of mathematics:

  • An understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
  • A broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
  • Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
  • The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts.
  • The ability to think independently and to persevere when faced with challenges.
  • To embrace the value of learning from mistakes.
  • The ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
  • Fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques.
  • A wide range of mathematical vocabulary.
  • A commitment to and passion for the subject.
