Science

The science curriculum at St Peter and St Paul CE (VA) Primary School is designed to inspire and feed children's natural curiosity about the world around them and all its phenomena.  Science is an integral part of our lives, with links to many other subjects including maths, computing and English.

We teach science through a themed approach where knowledge and key skills are revisited and built upon.  Lessons encourage the children to investigate, solve problems and ask questions in an exploratory style to make learning memorable.  All science teaching follows the National Curriculum and covers the scientific areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

Our extensive school grounds offer the chance for investigations to be carried out, including the growing of plants, trees and vegetables in the school garden.

We have developed strong links with our local secondary school which enables us to access a greater range of resources and to have the opportunity to have lessons in science labs.

In addition, we also hold an annual Science Week where the usual curriculum is suspended and science, technology and design are the focus for the week.  This is in line with the British Science Week and includes science visits and visitors.

The impact of our science curriculum is that our children attain highly and progress well because they take away a deep understanding of science content, knowledge and scientific skills.

We have held a Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) for several years.  This Mark not only illustrates the value we place on science, but also provides us with a process by which we can both measure the quality of our curriculum and ensure it is always fit for purpose.
